I. CAREER SERVICES RATIONALE

A. Program Description

The Guidance & Career Services Unit which is under the Office of Student Affairs is a unit that caters to the career needs of the San Pablo Colleges community. The said unit also involves the participation of parents, faculty and personnel.

The office provides programs and activities that enhance employability skills and career competencies. Career Counseling which focuses on the decision-making process is conducted regularly with students and parents. Enrichment programs such as seminars and workshops are facilitated to develop employability skills. Contact with the companies that offer job opportunities is given full attention.

B. Program Objectives

General

To enhance career competencies through systematic, relevant, comprehensive and developmental career programs.

Specific

a. To provide career services that will bring out positive self-concept and prepare students/graduates for effective working skills.

b. To provide hands-on experience essential in the working environment, and

c. To provide employment opportunities through an intensive company networking.

C. CAREER PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Grade School Level

a. Career Awareness Day (CAD)

The Career Awareness Day program introduces the world of work to pupils at an early age, having a clear link between school and work. This is a one day activity for the graduating grade school pupils with the following objectives: To identify capabilities, interests and skills for a better understanding of self; To provide essential information on the different career fields available that fits pupils interest and personality and to incorporate qualities and attitudes in effective career.

b. Exit Interview (Grade VI Pupils)

This is given to all graduating grade VI pupils to fully assist them in preparing themselves in Junior High School thru personal sharing and exchange of ideas with the assigned guidance counselor.

Junior High School Level

a. Career Orientation

This seminar is designed for Grade 10 students to orient them to become aware of their career interests, skills/abilities, personality, and values. They acquire knowledge and information about choosing a career and its importance for the student’s growth and development. They are also guided on deciding what track/strand they want to pursue in senior high school.

Senior High School Level

a. Career Seminar

This seminar is designed for Grade 12 students which aim to provide students with the relevant career information, advice, and guidance that are suitable for their personal needs, to help them understand and develop the skills that are required to be successful for whatever career path they choose, and to provide them with impartial advice about options that is available to them.

b. Exit Interview (Graduating High School Students)

This is given to all graduating high school students to fully assist them in preparing themselves in the tertiary education thru personal sharing and exchange of ideas with the assigned guidance counselor.

College Level

a. Career Seminar

In this seminar, graduating students imparted knowledge about the different job-hunting tools and techniques. They also learn how to have a winning attitude and project a professional image when dealing with people.

b. Labor Education Seminar

This seminar is designed for graduating students to acquire knowledge or information about basic rights on wages, wage-related benefits, security of tenure, authorized and unauthorized cause for termination. Students also learn the different pre-employment requirements and the values and work ethics to be prepared for the field of work.

c. Job Fair

This event helps students land jobs immediately after graduation. The Career Placement Officer invites different companies with which it has ties-up to be part of the one-day job fair for graduating students.

d. Career Self-Help Drive

This particular activity involves the thorough dissemination of information regarding the students’ career awareness, information about the company/ companies and current job opportunities. This is done thru the following:

- Direct communication with the department heads informing them of the job opportunities.

- Posting of Career Self- Help materials on the different bulletin boards as well as Job Opening or Vacancies.

e. Resume File Folder

The Resume File Folder is a compilation of graduating college students’ resumes’ for a specific academic year. The students fill up a standardized format of the resume accurately. The compiled resume will be brought to the company for referral purposes.

f. Employment Destination Survey / Tracer

Actual Visitation with private and government firms and sending of letters to SPC Alumni thru SPC Alumni Office has been made by the Career Placement Officer. This is intended to establish a possible job linkage or tie-up and search for scholarship grants for the undergraduate students. Specifically, this aims to promote SPC and its graduates to get the support of private government agencies, and as the SPC Alumni to give priority to SPC graduate in any existing job opportunity or future job vacancies.

g. Exit Interview (Graduating College Students)

This is given to all graduating college students to fully assist them in preparing themselves in the world of professionals thru personal sharing and exchange of ideas with the assigned guidance counselor.

II. EXTERNAL RELATIONS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Establishing Linkage/ Partnership with Industry

The San Pablo Colleges recognizes that establishing partnerships with industry is beneficial to both students and alumni. For the students, partnerships provide professional environments during OJT and internships. For the alumni, these partnerships open employment opportunities.

The school also recognizes that meaningful and relevant cooperation with industry can support curriculum development to produce graduates fully exposed to the latest trends in the industry.

The following are key partnership areas:

  • Career Seminars

  • Student internship program or on-the-job training

  • Faculty immersion

  • Recruitment for employment purposes

  • Scholarships and research

  • Community extension / services

Policies for Industry Partners

  • The San Pablo Colleges only partners with legitimate, government-registered, and well-established companies and institutions.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) should be signed by both the San Pablo Colleges and the industry partner to signify intent to collaborate and cooperate in more specific programs.

  • The MOU can be signed after the submission of documentary requirements by the industry partner. This is a one-page document that indicates the willingness of both parties to engage in a more meaningful partnership in the aforementioned key partnership areas.

  • Specific programs will be pursued and implemented upon signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). This is a more detailed agreement that includes the provisions for sending OJT to different companies.

  • The signatory for the school is the President for both MOU and MOA. It is preferred that the signatory of the industry partner is of equivalent or comparative rank and stature.

  • The college, as per advice from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), will not form partnerships with manpower/ human resource companies and recruitment agencies.

Services Provided to Industry Partners

Companies who submit these requirements will be provided the following services upon request:

  • Provision for the list of graduates or directory with contact information.

  • Posting of job openings in the career portal on the San Pablo Colleges website

  • Inclusion in the mailing list for the annual Job Fair

Note: GCSU will not provide a graduate list to manpower / human resource companies, as per the advice of the Department of Labor and Employment.

Companies with a signed MOU / MOA with SPC will be provided the following:

  • Priority invitation to the annual Job Fair

  • Posting of job openings in the career portal on the website

  • A complimentary copy of the list of graduates

  • Priority placement for top OJT’s

  • On-campus recruitment upon request and availability of venues and schedules

  • Career talk with students upon request and availability of venues and schedules

  • Company logo with a short profile uploaded in the official website page for industry partners

Procedures in Establishing Industry Partnership

  1. Set up a meeting with the company

    • College representatives and the Guidance & Career Services Unit will be invited to join the meeting.

    • It is preferred that companies are identified by the school.

    • Guidance & Career Services will prepare the template of MOU and MOA to be given to company representatives.

  2. Present Industry Partnership Program (IPP)

    • Industry Partnership Program presentation includes the objectives of the San Pablo Colleges in partnering with the industry. It also includes basic information on OJT policies and schedules for different degree programs.

  3. Guidelines for Exchange of MOA

    • All edited and reviewed MOA's need to be reviewed by the Legal Counsel.

    • Only MOA’s finalized and approved for signing by the Legal Counsel, are to be processed and sent to the industry partner for their legal vetting.

    • Only MOA’s vetted legally by both parties can be endorsed for signing by the President.

    • MOA’s signed by both parties need to be notarized.

    • Copies of signed MOA’s will also be forwarded to San Pablo Colleges and the Industry Partners concerned.

  4. Schedule ceremonial MOA signing

    • The ceremonial MOA signing is optional. However, it may provide media exposure to both the school and the industry partner.

    • During the ceremonial signing, all signatories should have their copy of the MOA.
